WEBBER was the last one to enter the boardroom, leaving Tristan nervously pacing outside. He wanted Tristan with him, but he also knew it would have been inappropriate to ask the board to allow him to attend the meeting since he was not a formal member of the board of directors nor was he a KIC employee any longer. Additionally, Webber knew he was personally going to be under fire for all of this, although he did nothing wrong and had no control over what got leaked to the press, and he was grateful Tristan would not be subjected to the same ridicule. He would take the abuse from the board for the sake of the company, but his main objective was to do whatever he had to do to get the board to prepare a statement for the press showing support and clearing him from any wrongdoing. He also had to convince the board to allow him to make certain statements about his personal life within the confines of the corporate press conference, and he could do that by making them see that these type of questions were going to come up, so he may as well address them in the press conference rather than allowing them to surface during Q&A.
The members of the board were all seated at the conference table with eyes on Webber as he stood at the head of the table. Webber cleared his throat before he spoke. “Members of the board, you’ll have to excuse me as I don’t know the protocol for leading the board meeting since you have already accepted my resignation but haven’t found my replacement. Would one of you like to do the honors?”
The board members exchanged glances, but no one volunteered. Hillary Jordan was the first to speak. “Webber, I think I speak for the entire board,” she said, looking around at her fellow board members, “when I ask that you chair the meeting as usual. You’ve been at the helm of KIC since your father’s passing and have done a spectacular job of building this company to what it is today. We as a board forget to mention that sometimes. So please do the honors.”
Webber mouthed “thank you” to Hillary and smiled humbly as he nodded to the rest of the board and called the meeting to order. “Since you asked me to chair the meeting, I would like to say a few words before we get started,” Webber stated.
The board again looked around the room, most nodding in approval, a couple looking stoic but not happy.
“Members of the board,” he said looking around the room, palms flat on the table. “I’ve spent all of my adult life running this company. I’ve done it respectfully with as much dignity as I could, and I will hold my head high when I walk out of here for the last time. But let me make one thing very clear. As long as I’m here, and as long as I’m a major stockholder in the company, I will not tolerate any disrespect regarding my personal life.
